Originally steered by lead vocals from Tony Williams, The Platters soared to the top of the US R&B charts in 1955 with doo-wop classic "Only You (And You Alone)," also reaching number five on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Ringo Starr brings the right level of nonchalance to his cover of the song, which features none other than John Lennon on the guitar. Ringo Starr didn't fare quite as well as The Platters on the official charts, although he did go to number six on the US Billboard best-seller chart and reach the summit of the Easy Listening chart in early 1975. The track was included on Ringo Starr's fourth studio album Goodnight Vienna (1974), for which he was joined by many of the same musicians who appeared on his 1973 album Ringo, including Billy Preston, Klaus Voormann, Robbie Robertson, Harry Nilsson, and producer Richard Perry. Elton John also supplied a track in the form of "Snookeroo," co-written with Bernie Taupin. The LP was later certified gold.
