Decorated Canadian trio Rush formed in Toronto in the late '60s and spent the next two decades perfecting their head-spinning, chameleonic brand of fantasy-driven prog-rock, generating a steady stream of world-dominating albums, from 1975's Fly by Night and 1980's Permanent Waves to 1987's Hold Your Fire, which was heavily rooted in the synth-pop sound of the era. By this stage in their career, the high-pitched voice of charismatic frontman Geddy Lee had shifted down a few octaves while his keyboard playing gave the band's music a contemporaneous sheen. Containing a reference to the album title in its opening lyrics ("Hold your fire / Keep it burning bright"), "Mission" was the calling card and seventh track on Hold Your Fire. The soaring, inspirational ballad offers a mediation on satisfaction and human ambition ("A spirit with a vision is a dream"), and shows the inventive rock luminaries in a new light.
