From filming cover songs in wolf sanctuaries to soundtracking action-adventure video games, the Chicago-born singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist Shawn James – who performs both solo and with his backing band, The Shapeshifters – has spent the past decade singing from the heart. In 2018, he put his passionate, bluesy stamp on a cover of Bill Withers's 1971 breakthrough hit "Ain't No Sunshine." Recorded for his EP The Madrid Sessions, the song shows the star – who grew up singing gospel – in all his soulful finery, for a moving interpretation of the heart-wrenching heartbreaker. The original version of "Ain't No Sunshine" was featured on Bill Withers's 1971 album Just As I Am, which was produced by Booker T. Jones and catapulted the "Lovely Day" hit-maker's career into orbit, reaching number six on the US R&B Chart and number three on the Billboard Hot 100 chart at the time of its release.
