"Dead Memories,” the fifth track on Slipknot's fourth album All Hope is Gone, (2008) is a celebration of letting go. The band's Corey Taylor wrote the song following "a pretty brutal divorce", and as such, "Dead Memories" takes the form of a cathartic release for the famed lead vocalist, who presents his emotions in their rawest state – backed by an army of heavy chugging guitars. "We were never alive / And we won't be born again," he declares in the chorus, while a hair-raising guitar solo later takes the song off in a whole new direction. "Dead Memories" served as the third single on All Hope is Gone, which skewed more heavily towards politics than Slipknot's previous albums and went on to receive platinum certification from the RIAA in August 2010. It also sadly ended up being Slipknot's final studio LP to include their full original lineup after bassist Paul Gray was found dead in an Iowa hotel on May 24, 2010 and drummer Joey Jordison was fired from the band.
