A radically different version of Johnny Cash's classic "Ring of Fire" arrived in 1990 courtesy of Californian punks Social Distortion. Fueled by hot guitar licks and plenty of snarling punk fervour, "Ring of Fire" was featured on Social Distortion's third self-titled album, which saw them break through to the mainstream, taking bangers like "Let It Be Me" and "So Far Away" along for the ride. The album – which drew from cowpunk, rock 'n' roll, country, and blues as much as the hardcore punk of their origins – was the band's first LP to make it onto the Billboard 200, where it reached number 128, and it went on to earn gold certification in the US. Social Distortion kept things going on their 1992 follow-up too; Somewhere Between Heaven and Hell was one of the best-selling albums of their career and gave the band their highest-ranking single to date, "Bad Luck," which reached number 2 on the Modern Rock Tracks chart.
