“Oklahoma Breakdown” was originally written by rockabilly-blues musician (and one half of the Hosty Duo) Mike Hosty, but the version that became a surprise hit single and dominated the country-western airwaves during 2007 was by Texas country / Red Dirt performer Stoney LaRue. After having garnered positive attention for his 2005 debut album The Red Dirt Album, Stoney LaRue decided to capture his rawer live sound with a recording at Billy Bob’s Texas, as part of the Live at Billy Bob’s Texas live album series created by Rick Smith. This recording puts Stoney LaRue’s talents as a live performer on full display and combines the country-rock sound with a bluesier attitude. Produced by Bob Wright, the version of “Oklahoma Breakdown” on this live album was an immediate highlight for listeners, and soon the song picked up steam on the radio. The song would go on to be covered by artists like Toby Keith in later years.
