A coming together of John Mescall, The Cat Empire's Ollie McGill, and Emily Lubitz, the lead vocalist of Tinpan Orange, "Dumb Ways to Die" is, in fact, an Australian public safety video disguised as a love-it-or-hate-it pop song. Created for Melbourne’s viral campaign to promote train safety, the song reels off all the "dumb" accidents that could result in death, from 'setting fire to your hair' and 'poking a stick at a grizzly bear' to 'eating medicine that's out of date' and 'using your private parts as piranha bait'. Folk-pop bop "Dumb Ways to Die," with a video art directed by Patrick Baron, animated by Julian Frost and produced by Cinnamon Darvall, struck big following its official release in November 2012, largely thanks to its viral status on social media. The safety campaign won seven Webby Awards in 2013 including the Best Animation Film & Video and Best Public Service & Activism (Social Content & Marketing). That year, it was transformed into an app for iOS and Android.
