LA's larger-than-life comedy-rock dua Tenacious D aka Jack Black and Kyle Gass formed in 1994 and began laying the foundations for their Grammy-winning career via a flurry of parody acoustic offerings, before signing to Epic Records in May 2000. For their 2001 self-titled debut album, they rounded up a full band of A-listers, including Dave Grohl on drums and guitar, keyboardist Page McConnell of Phish, guitarist Warren Fitzgerald of The Vandals, and bassist Steven Shane McDonald of Redd Kross. The follow-up record emerged five years later, 2006's The Pick of Destiny, which saw the duo fare even better on the US charts, debuting at number 8 on the Billboard 200. Produced by the Dust Brothers' John King, and boasting guest stars in the form of Meat Loaf, Ronnie James Dio, and Dave Grohl, the album served as the soundtrack for Tenacious D's 2006 musical fantasy comedy film of the same name, with heartfelt bromancer "Dude (I Totally Miss You)" among the colourful, comedic songs.
