For the opener and title track of their 2009 album—and major-label debut—I and Love and You, The Avett Brothers deliver a sweeping, grandiose show of emotion that gradually brings in more instruments as the ballad progresses. The powerful road song is built around lush vocal harmonies as well as solo vocals and was inspired by the work of late alt-country icon Townes Van Zandt. Here, the protagonist sings of leaving his current life behind to take up residence in Brooklyn (with its “Brooklyn, Brooklyn, take me in” line becoming a leading refrain). The city appears to welcome him with open arms at first—before the loneliness starts to creep in. "I and Love and You" grew into one of the band's signature tunes, particularly popular in a live context. With legendary producer Rick Rubin on board for I and Love and You, North Carolina's grassroots folk favourites buffed up the raw and rootsy sound of previous albums to aim for a collection of bigger, bolder statements like "I and Love and You."
