Bruce Springsteen wrote and recorded "Atlantic City" for his 1982 solo album Nebraska. This gloomy tale meditates on death, life and gambling, sketching out a tale of two young lovers whose fate lies in the casinos of the titular New Jersey resort. In the song, the pair set off for a romantic getaway but the male protagonist has already set his sights on a life of organised crime. “Well, now, everything dies, baby, that's a fact / But maybe everything that dies someday comes back,” he muses, strengthening the song's meditative theme with a maudlin wash of strings. In 1993, The Band put their own spin on the song for their 1993 album Jericho, which they recorded in the wake of a new recording contract with Sony. After the major label rejected the material, a new contract with Great Pyramid Records ensued and the group got to grips with recording Jericho. When The Band split up in 1999, mainstay Levon Helm continued to play "Atlantic City" live as a solo artist.
