Alex Chilton is in fine form on this pop bop from blue-eyed soul favourites The Box Tops, who formed in Memphis, Tennessee in 1967. Released as a single in 1969, "Soul Deep" finds the protagonist employing natural imagery to convey the infinity of his love. "'Cause my love is a river running soul-deep / Way down inside me, it's-a soul-deep / It's too big to hide and it can't be denied / My love is a river running soul deep," declares Alex Chilton. "Soul Deep" is one of several singles released from the band's 1969 Dimensions LP along with "Turn on a Dream," which reached number 58 on the US Billboard Hot 100. "Soul Deep" crashed into the Top 40 hit in several countries worldwide, reaching number 22 in the UK and 18 in the US. It also cracked the Top 10 in Australia (going to number 7) and in Canada (going to number 9) but fared particularly well in South Africa, where it sailed to number two.
