The Church create a mysterious, enigmatic atmosphere with "Reptile." "Too dangerous to keep / Too feeble to let go / And you want to bite the hand / Should have stopped this long ago," begins the haunting song, which was released as the second single from the Australian band's 1988 dream-pop breakthrough, Starfish. Drawing inspiration from lead singer Steve Kilbey's actual encounter with a reptile, "Reptile" brings his distinctive voice in line with hypnotic, shimmering, psychedelic-tinged guitars that slither like the song's titular creature. "Reptile" served as the eighth track on Starfish, which became the band's biggest commercial triumph, propelled by the success of "Under the Milky Way," which cracked the US Billboard Hot 100 at 24 and reached number two on the Mainstream Rock Tracks chart. Thanks to Starfish, The Church were able to effect their transition from underground heroes to future bigwigs of Australian alt-rock.
