Former indie-folk duo The Civil Wars – aka Joy Williams and John Paul White – emerged in 2008 and released two albums, Barton Hallow (2011) and The Civil Wars (2013), as well as picking up four Grammy Awards before parting ways in 2014. For their 2013 song "Devil's Backbone," featured on their second self-titled studio album, which was released shortly before their acrimonious split, the pair venture into murder ballad territory on an Americana-esque song about a criminal on the run. In the track, the protagonist has fallen in love with a bad guy and is appealing to God for the answers. "O Lord, O Lord, what do I do / I’ve fallen for someone who’s nothing like you / He’s raised on the edge of the devil’s backbone / Oh, I just wanna take him home / Oh, I just wanna take him home." The Civil Wars went to the top of the Billboard 200 chart with LP track "From This Valley," which gave the duo their fourth Grammy.
