Released in early 1974, The Doobie Brothers' fourth studio effort What Were Once Vices Are Now Habits found the band streamlining their smooth brand of Southern rock even further by doubling down on the vocal harmonies, groovy guitar riffs, and sun-soaked melodies that characterized their first part of their career. Produced by Ted Templeman, the LP produced their first ever Number 1 hit, the rootsy Patrick Simmons original "Black Water," as well as the singles "Another Park, Another Sunday" and "Eyes of Silver." The latter was written by Tom Johnston and featured his trademark rhythmic guitar strumming, a style that preceded the disco "chicken scratch" technique by a few years, as well as a brass section courtesy of Stax Records' The Memphis Horns. "Eyes of Silver" was released as the album's second single and reached Number 52 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, while What Were Once Vices Are Now Habits peaked at Number 4 on the Billboard 200.
