"Shame and Scandal in the Family," also known as "Shame & Scandal," originated from Sir Lancelot's 1943 creation for the film I Walked with a Zombie, initially called "Fort Holland Calypso Song." Many decades later, it was covered by South East London ska and reggae band The Dualers in their 2013 album, With Respect... Though mostly faithful to the original version, The Dualers' rendition of "Shame & Scandal" imbued the song with an upbeat ska feel and made minor changes to its lyrics without altering their essence. Sir Lancelot's late 1940s recording of "Shame & Scandal" paved the way for covers by Odetta and Burl Ives, until 1962 when Lord Melody revitalized it with new lyrics, maintaining its catchy chorus. This version transformed it into a narrative about a young Puerto Rican's matrimonial endeavors thwarted by familial revelations, echoing the plot of Robert William Service's Madame La Marquise. Lord Melody's rendition, celebrated for its extensive recording history by the Historical Museum of Southern Florida, uses humor and Caribbean storytelling to explore themes of identity, family secrets, and societal norms.
