As synonymous with the Irish capital as whisky, literature and Guinness, "Molly Malone" tells the fictional tale of a fishwife who meets an untimely end. Widely considered to be Dublin's unofficial anthem, the melancholic, traditional folk rhyme – which is also known under variant titles "Cockles and Mussels" or in Dublin's Fair City – was made famous by Irish folk band The Dubliners who recorded their beloved version in 1977, backed by guitar, violin, flute and mandolin. In the song, the titular heroine is described as a popular local figure: "In Dublin’s fair city / Where the girls are so pretty / I first set my eyes on sweet Molly Malone / As she wheeled her wheel-barrow / Through the streets broad and narrow / Crying, “Cockles and mussels, alive, alive, oh!” whose ghost ultimately roams the streets after she succumbs to a fever.
