The iconic American rock and roll duo The Everly Brothers released the single "Wake Up Little Susie" on September 2, 1957. The song was the first crossover success of The Everly Brothers' career, reaching the top of the pop, country, and R&B charts in the United States while also peaking at Number 2 UK on the Official Singles Chart. Written by the husband-and-wife songwriting team of Felice and Boudleaux Bryant, the lyrics to "Wake Up Little Susie" depict a couple of teenagers who have to make up a story after falling asleep at the drive-in and staying out way past their curfew. The track was also temporarily banned from Boston radio stations because its lyrics were deemed too suggestive at the time. In 1981, Simon & Garfunkel paid homage to The Everly Brothers with a version of "Wake Up Little Susie" that later appeared on their 1982 live album The Concert in Central Park. The folk-rock duo's take on the twangy rockabilly classic hit Number 27 on the Billboard Hot 100 and was their last Top 40 hit in the US.
