It's a strong case of floaty by name, floaty by nature for Detroit R&B troupe The Floaters, who formed out of the ashes of the Detroit Emeralds and whose chilled-out romantic soul gem "Float On" became the group's dreamy calling card in 1977. Playing into the era's love of astrology, the song begins with a run-through of the group's individual star signs while lush orchestral instrumentation gently rolls in. "Take my hand / Come with me, baby, to Love Land," they beckon over a backdrop as plush and soft as a sheepskin rug. "Float On" was The Floaters' only hit, making it to number two on the Billboard Hot 100, topping the UK singles chart, and reaching number five on the Irish Singles Chart. In the 1990s, "Float On" (not to be confused with the 2004 Modest Mouse song of the same name) buried itself into the collective cultural consciousness when it was adapted and used in an advert for Cadbury's Crème Eggs.
