By 1985, Philadelphia-based rock band The Hooters had finally achieved mainstream success with their major-label debut, Nervous Night. The group, which had released their first studio album Amore in 1983, managed to land a record deal with Columbia Records the following year after guitarist Eric Bazilian and keyboardist Rob Hyman participated in the songwriting and recording process of Cyndi Lauper's studio debut, She's So Unusual. Produced by Rick Chertoff, the album included three songs from their first LP, as well as some previously unreleased material such as the album's third single, "Day by Day." Written by Eric Bazilian Rob Hyman, and Rick Chertoff, the song is an anthemic arena rock number driven forward by propulsive drums and a melodic mandoline riff, with lyrics about living in the present. Even though it took nearly two years to finish, "Day by Day" became a huge hit upon its release, peaking at Number 18 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Nervous Night (1985) was also a massive success for The Hooters, reaching Number 12 on the Billboard 200 and obtaining double-platinum certification in the United States.
