After scoring his first big hit as a songwriter in 1965 with the single "Sunday and Me" for Jay and the Americans, Brill Building alumni Neil Diamond was approached by Don Kirshner, who was looking for new music to feature on the Monkees' TV show. The producer was captivated by the bright-eyed bubblegum pop gem "I'm a Believer," which was eventually released as the Monkees' second single in 1966 after the success of "Last Train to Clarksville" earlier that year. Sung by drummer Micky Dolenz and produced by Jeff Barry, "I'm a Believer" reached the top of the US Billboard Hot 100 chart in December 1966 and stayed there for seven consecutive weeks, becoming the best-selling single for all of 1967. It was also included in the group's second studio album More of the Monkees, as well as in Neil Diamond's sophomore LP, Just for You, both released in 1967. In 2000, American pop rock group Smash Mouth covered the song for the soundtrack of the animated comedy Shrek.

I rewrote the words for a fun song at my church at even the background vocals were right on. This was so much fun and I'll be using Karaoke-version again!
