New Jersey natives The Rascals rose to fame in the late 1960s with a handful of Top 20 singles that put them at the forefront of the blue-eyed soul scene. Groovin', their third studio album and the last one billed as The Young Rascals, was released in 1967 and found the band incorporating elements from the psychedelic genre into their soul-inflected pop structures. One fine example of this subtle transformation is the single "I've Been Lonely Too Long," a hooky power-pop tune based on The Temptations' 1966 hit "Ain't Too Proud to Beg." Credited to the songwriting partnership of Felix Cavaliere and Eddie Brigati, the track was released on January 9, 1967, and reached Number 16 on the Billboard Hot 100. It also enjoyed great success in Canada, where it peaked at Number 7. The song was later included in the compilation Collections (1967) under the name "Lonely Too Long." Some of the artists that have covered the song throughout the years include Byrdie Green, The Fireballs, and Richie Furay.
