Steered by the distinctive voice of Joseph Pope, pop-soul vocal group The Tams formed in Atlanta, Georgia in 1960 and took the decade by storm, mopping up chart victories with "What Kind of Fool (Do You Think I Am)" in 1963 and this track in 1964, which went to number 41 on the Billboard Hot 100 and reached number 10 on the US R&B chart. "Hey Girl Don't Bother Me," which was written by Ray Whitley and formed the group's first full-length record of the same name—released in 1964—was later adopted by the UK northern soul scene, which had sprung up in the dancehalls of northern England in the late 1960s. This renewed surge of interest tipped the reissue of the track into the UK singles chart in September 1971, where it claimed the number-one spot. "Hey Girl Don't Bother Me" also zoomed to the top of the Irish Singles Chart, making The Tams the first African-American to claim a number-one single in Ireland.
