Much-loved Canadian indie stalwarts The Tragically Hip aka Rob Baker, Gordon Downie, Johnny Fay, Paul Langlois, and Gord Sinclair, assembled in Kingston, Ontario in 1984 and released their self-titled debut EP three years later. The group gradually ascended the throne with a succession of homegrown hits and fan favorites that included this belter, "Nautical Disaster," which may not have reached the high seas of chart victory but did rule the waves of 1990s college rock. Released in 1995, "Nautical Disaster" is a mini faux-historical epic in musical form, an alt-rock missive that balances deft storytelling with grungey, jangly guitars. "Nautical Disaster" was launched in February 1995 as the third single from The Tragically Hip's fifth album, the acoustic-flecked Day for Night. Released in 1994, the LP was produced by hotshot producer Daniel Lanois who famously worked on U2 albums The Joshua Tree (1987) and Achtung Baby (1991).
