By the time their Capitol debut Completion Backwards Principle came out in 1981, The Tubes had fully transitioned from outrageous parody rockers to an FM-friendly classic rock act. The album, which became their first Top 40 hit in the United States, contained the singles "Don't Want to Wait Anymore" and "Talk to Ya Later," a new-wave inspired track that hit Number 101 on the Billboard Hot 100 and Number 7 on the Mainstream Rock Chart. Written by David Foster, Charles Prince, Fee Waybill, and Toto's Steve Lukather, "Talk to Ya Later" is a comedic tale of a date gone awry—a man invites a girl out on a date, they both go back to his place and she ends up never leaving. "Talk to Ya Later" was also a smash hit on American radio and even had an accompanying video on high rotation in MTV. By far one of The Tubes' most successful songs, "Talk to Ya Later" helped set the stage for their mainstream breakout with 1983's Outside Inside.
