"Do you like American music? / I like American music / Don't you like American music, baby?," asks The Violent Femmes' vocalist Gordon Gano at the beginning of their 1991 track "American Music," using the question as an ice-breaker to woo a lover. "I need a date to the prom / Would you like to come along / But nobody would go to the prom with me, baby," he continues, no doubt souring the conversation with his self-deprecating negativity. Nonetheless, the song bops along with the perky joys of '50s and '60s surf and rock 'n' roll to secure a dry-witted entertainer and staple of the band's live repertoire. Featured on The Violent Femmes' fifth studio album Why Do Birds Sing? – their last with original drummer Victor DeLorenzo"American Music" was a hit for the band, reaching number two on Billboard's Modern Rock chart in 1991, and remains one of their best-known tunes, along with party-starting favourite "Blister in the Sun," of course.
