Toby Keith's 2021 album Peso in My Pocket brought his trademark sense of humour to the fore with the celebratory air of tracks like "Old School" helping to lift the spirits. The following June, Toby Keith announced that he had been dealing with stomach cancer, radiation, chemotherapy, and surgery for the past six months, describing his cancer as "pretty debilitating" in December 2022. He poured all his pain into a performance of "Don't Let the Old Man In," on which the Oklahoma-born tunesmith uses the metaphor of an 'old man' to confront his own mortality. "Don't let the old man in, I wanna leave this alone / Can't leave it up to him, he's knocking on my door / And I knew all of my life, that someday it would end / Get up and go outside, don't let the old man in," he begins, putting his voice to a simple acoustic backdrop. The song was released in 2018 and originally written for Clint Eastwood’s film The Mule.
