Tom Jones borrowed a country song from US songwriter Claude "Curly" Putman Jr. and made it his own, netting a Christmas number-one and a worldwide hit in December 1966, when he stayed at the top of the charts for seven weeks. "The Green Green Grass of Home" is a lonely tale about a prisoner who wakes up from a nice dream to discover he's stuck inside a real-life nightmare: "Then I awake and look around me / At the four grey walls that surround me / And I realize, yes, I was only dreaming." Tom Jones was inspired to cover the song after hearing Jerry Lee Lewis's version of "The Green Green Grass of Home," recorded for his 1965 album Country Songs for City Folks (later re-issued as All Country). Tom Jones named his fifth album of 1967 after the song, which is captured here for his 2002 homecoming show at Wales's medieval Cardiff Castle and contained on the DVD Tom Jones - Live at Cardiff Castle.
