"Red-Neck Women" is a song by American country singer-songwriter Tony Joe White, included in his 1980 eighth studio LP, The Real Thang. Raised in Oak Grove, Louisiana, Tony Joe White made his official debut in the late 1960s, scoring his first hit in 1969 with the rural-flavored "Polk Salad Annie," a Top 10 entry that would later be covered by Elvis Presley. Even though chart success eluded him for most of his prolific career, Tony Joe White continued to polish his trademark "swamp rock" sound, which combined rockabilly with blues, country, and funk music. From the late 1970s to the early 1980s, the popularity of disco music seeped into his work, leaving its mark on albums like Eyes (1976) or The Real Thang (1980), his first and only release on Casablanca Records. Despite showcasing prominent disco and funk influences, The Real Thang featured a re-recording of "Polk Salad Annie" and the country-tinged "Red-Neck Women," a duet with outlaw country artist Waylon Jennings. Written by Tony Joe White with his wife Leann, "Red-Neck Women" is a traditional country number about a beer-drinking, truck-driving woman who unapologetically embraces the redneck way of life. Just like much of Tony Joe White's catalog,"Red-Neck Women" didn't enter the charts, but it eventually became both a fan favorite and a staple of his live repertoire.
