For their infectious remake of John Denver's "Take Me Home Country Roads," Jamaican icons Toots & the Maytals added a reggae backbeat, swapped out the original song's "West Virginia" for "West Jamaica" while duly removing any mountain and mining references: “Dark and dusty, painted on the sky, misty taste of moonshine, teardrop in my eye / Caribbean sunshine, pirates of the sea, wondrous island, home, sweet home to me," goes the third verse. The group—led by singer Frederick "Toots" Hibbert—included their red-hot reinterpretation of the 1971 folk classic (which was coincidentally, the same year Toots & the Maytals were signed by producer Chris Blackwell to Island Records) on their 1974 album In the Dark. The original iteration of "Take Me Home Country Roads" was, of course, written by John Denver along with his long-term collaborators Bill Danoff and Taffy Nivert, who also operated as folkies Fat City.
