Led by singer and guitarist Evan Felker, bassist R.C. Edwards, violinist Kyle Nix, guitarist Ryan Engleman, and drummer Gabe Pearson (who joined in 2011), Turnpike Troubadours formed in 2005 and made their way to the top of the Oklahoma Red Dirt (named for the colour of the soil there) music scene through a series of memorable releases that crossed outlaw country with rootsier country-folk and hints of Americana, later going on hiatus in 2019 before returning in 2021. "Diamonds & Gasoline" is the melancholic title track of their second album, which was released in 2010 and produced by Red Dirt mainstay Mike McClure. The acoustic song finds the protagonist in self-deprecating mode as he considers his worth in the light of his love for another. Ultimately, he appears resigned to his fate: "But I'm stuck here in Tulsa / With my Oklahoma blues / With a pair of concrete shoes / That got me sinking pretty low".
