Purveyors of unifying reggae-pop, UB40 ruled the roost during the 1970s to the 1990s with a hefty stack of charting singles, hit albums (notably 1983's Labour of Love and 1993's Promises and Lies), and numerous accolades including four Grammy nods and the Brit Award nomination for Best British Group in 1984. Released at the height of their fame in 1989, "Kingston Town" is up there among their best-loved and best-known tunes, a Jamaica-repping reggae bop that embodies the essence of UB40. The track was originally written by Lord Creator and released as a single on producer Clancy Eccles' Clandisc label in 1970 before UB40 decided to put their stamp on the tune nearly twenty years later. "Kingston Town" was released as the second single from UB40's ninth album Labour of Love II (comprising a selection of covers) and went to number four on the UK Singles Chart as well as hitting number one in France and the Netherlands.
