An anthem for the season, "Summer" was released in June 1976 by Californian funk and soul pioneers War, a long-running band from Long Beach who put their name to no less than seven top 10 hits during the '70s, including "Spill the Wine," "Why Can't We Be Friends?", "The Cisco Kid" and “Low Rider,” as well as bagging the best-selling album of 1973 and Billboard chart-topper, The World Is a Ghetto. Their sound was formed from an exhilarating mix of Latin pop styles, reggae, funk and blues, and often channeled a laidback feel. A serene tune with slinky percussion, "Summer" embodied this carefree spirit and became the soundtrack to long, hot '70s summer nights. The track was issued as a single from War's Greatest Hits album in 1976, and reached number seven on the Billboard Hot 100 pop singles chart, number four on the R&B chart, as well as shooting to the top of the Easy Listening chart.
