The late soul legend Bill Withers was famously gifted a gold toilet seat instead of a gold record from his record company, the now-defunct Sussex Records, to mark the success of his 1971 single "Ain't No Sunshine." Featuring an all-star lineup of musicians, including Booker T. Jones on keyboards and Stephen Stills on guitar, the song was a huge hit for Bill Withers, making it to Number 6 on the U.S. R&B Chart and Number 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. A mellow soul soother about love and yearning, Bill Withers was moved to write "Ain't No Sunshine" after watching 1962 drama movie Days of Wine and Roses, specifically inspired by the weak/strong dichotomy of alcoholism that informs the song's romantic themes. In 1972, he picked up the Grammy for Best R&B Song and "Ain't No Sunshine" was also covered by South African male choral group Ladysmith Black Mambazo, in 1999, who released a version as a single featuring vocalist Des'ree which peaked at Number 42 in the UK.
