“How Great Thou Art” is one of the most beloved Christian hymns. The original lyrics are from a poem written by Carl Boberg in 1885. The author was walking home from a church service in Sweden when a storm appeared. The sky was filled with thunder and lightning and he and his friends had to run for shelter. Later, the skies cleared and he heard the sounds of birds and church bells. That evening he wrote the poem “O Store Gud” and set it to a traditional Swedish melody. In 1949, British Methodist missionary Stewart K. Hine rewrote some of the earlier translations and came up with the title “How Great Thou Art”.
