“Gangsta’s Paradise” is without a doubt one of the most iconic tracks of the '90s. Taking its irresistible hook from Stevie Wonder‘s 1976 track “Pastime Paradise" (who received writing credits for the sampling) and featuring killer production from Doug Rasheed as well weaving in a haunting gospel-like wail, "Gangsta's Paradise" – which was contained on Coolio's second album of the same name (released in November 1995) – took an unparalleled trip through gangsta rapland with its head held high. Released in August 1995 and placed on the soundtrack to Dangerous Minds with Michelle Pfeiffer, the track was elevated by an era-defining video that featured the aforementioned actor and clips from the film. The late rapper Coolio, who passed away on September 28th, 2022, won a Grammy for Best Rap Solo Performance, two MTV Video Music Awards for Best Rap Video and Best Video from a Film, and a Billboard Music Award for his sterling effort.
