American Southern-rock legends Lynyrd Skynyrd know how to craft a closing track, whether it be for an entire album or just the first side of one. “Simple Man,” the roaring epic which closes out the first side of the band’s 1973 debut album Pronounced 'Lĕh-'nérd 'Skin-'nérd, is a perfect example of this: it gradually rises in tension, explodes into a frenzy of lead guitar, and slowly fades out. It’s no wonder “Simple Man” is considered one of the band’s most memorable songs, ranking as their third highest-selling digital song after the hit singles “Sweet Home Alabama” and “Free Bird.” The song was written by Ronnie Van Zant and Gary Rossington, and it was produced by Al Kooper (who also played the organ in the studio recording). “Simple Man” peaked at Number 13 on Billboard’s US Hot Rock & Alternative Songs chart. As of November 2013, the song has sold over 1,333,000 copies in the United States alone.
