Muse's "Exogenesis: Symphony Part 1 (Overture)" begins in a typically grandiose fashion; with soaring cinematic strings worthy of a space opera soundtrack. Matt Bellamy's chandelier-shattering falsetto slides in around the 1:50 mark to bring the classically-driven rock epic's existential theme off the page, asking "Who are we? / Where are we? / When are we? / Why are we?" The song's post-apocalyptical concept centres around the prospect of humanity leaving an uninhabitable Earth to populate outer space. Featuring a roughly 40-person orchestra, this epic symphony is part of a trio of four-minute songs closing out Muse’s fifth genre-spanning studio album The Resistance (2009), which took the number one spot in 19 countries, and reached the top five in the US and several others. Produced by Muse, The Resistance—which was recorded at Studio Bellini in Lake Como, Italy and is —won the Grammy Award for Best Rock Album in 2011.
