When progressive metal band System of a Down released their third record Steal This Album! back in 2002, they were on top of the alternative rock world. The group’s previous album, Toxicity (2001), had become massively successful, selling over 12 million copies worldwide. Steal This Album! was less a proper follow-up than it was an expansion of Toxicity, including songs that were written and partly recorded during the album’s sessions. “I-E-A-I-A-I-O” is one of the songs off of that third album, and it showcases the sense of experimentation and weirdness that accompanied those sessions. The song is driven by heavy palm muted riffing, a tight rhythm section, and singer Serj Tankian’s trademark alliterative style and quick delivery. It also features the group’s tendency towards melodies that sound traditionally Armenian and Middle Eastern. “I-E-A-I-A-I-O” was written by Serj Tankian, Daron Malakian, Shavo Odadjian, and John Dolmayan. It was produced by Rick Rubin and Daron Malakian. According to drummer John Dolmayan, the song’s lyrics were partly inspired by an encounter with actor David Hasselhoff.
