The doo-wop classic "Please Mr. Postman" will go down in history as the first Motown single to ever reach the top of the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States. Generally credited to Georgia Dobbins, William Garrett, Freddie Gorman, Brian Holland, and Robert Bateman, the song went through many different transformations from its inception until its release on August 21, 1961. By the time the single came out, singer Georgia Dobbins had abandoned the group and was replaced by Gladys Horton, who recorded lead vocals on the track. Lyrically speaking, the song is sung from the perspective of a young girl patiently waiting for her boyfriend's letter. It also features backing instrumentation by The Funk Brothers, a group of session musicians that consisted of Marvin Gaye on drums, James Jamerson on bass, Eddie Willis on guitar, and Richard "Popcorn" Wylie" on piano. In the years that followed, "Please Mr. Postman" was further popularized by The Beatles, who released a cover of the song in 1963.
