Both the album opener and the first single from Tool's fourth full-length album 10,000 Days, "Vicarious" was released commercially on lead singer Maynard James Keenan's birthday on April 17, 2006. Written by Maynard James Keenan and bandmates Danny Carey, Justin Chancellor, and Adam Jones, the song is a hard-hitting seven-minute epic that criticizes the need to live through others in the public eye, often rejoicing in their misfortunes and personal tragedies. Like most of the band's catalog, "Vicarious" makes use of complex time signatures and changing meters to convey an ever-growing sense of dread and discomfort. Shortly after its commercial release, the track climbed to Number 2 on both Billboard's US Alternative Airplay and Mainstream Rock Songs charts, even receiving a nomination for Best Hard Rock Performance at the 49th Annual Grammy Awards in 2007. In addition, the single's success pushed its parent album to the top of the Billboard 200. 10,000 Days would be Tool's last studio effort in over a decade.
