Released on August 1997, American alternative rockers 311's fourth album Transistor marked the beginning of a new era in the group's career. Unlike their previous releases, which largely fell under the rap rock category, Transistor found the band experimenting with other genres such as dub, space rock, and funk. It was preceded by the singles "Transistor" and "Prisoner," both of which were met with great enthusiasm by fans and critics alike. "Beautiful Disaster," the LP's third and final single, arrived on December 13, 1997, and climbed to Number 21 on Billboard's US Modern Rock Tracks chart. Swaying back and forth between hard-stomping guitar riffs and laid-back reggae instrumentation, "Beautiful Disaster" quickly became one of the band's most recognizable songs. It was written by lead singer Nick Hexum, who said the song is about falling in love with the wrong person. In the following years, "Beautiful Disaster" was featured in the TV shows Daria and Orange Is the New Black.
