Pushing her powerhouse voice to heavenly heights, the St. Louis-born musician and producer staked her claim to solo stardom on a sensual R&B ballad that sits at the top table of storied slow jams. Co-written with Cory Moore, Chad L Butler, and Michael G Dean "Angel" was released as the first single from Angela Winbush's debut album Sharp, forming the "quiet storm side" of the LP, which was issued in September 1987 and went to number seven on the Billboard R&B Albums chart and to number 81 on the Billboard 200. The track spent two weeks at the top of Billboard's R&B charts while also receiving a nomination in 1988 for the Soul Train Music Award for Best R&B/Soul Single, Female, also helping Angela Winbush to get a nomination for Female Album of the Year.
