Squeezing into that late 80s-era of post-disco, just before house music began to slide into view, New York troupe Atlantic Starr sauntered onto the club scene in 1977 under the initial name of Newban. After adding the Atlantic as a nod to their East Coast roots, they began lighting up the R&B charts with singles like 1978's "Stand Up" and "Keep It Coming," releasing two full-length albums that decade – their self-titled debut of 1978 and 1979's Bobby Ali-produced Straight to the Point. A gold-plated finger-snapper, "Circles" was one of their glitzier '80s offerings, released in 1982 for their fourth album Brilliance – which also yielded a hit single in "Love Me Down" – and gave the group their highest-charting dance single to date, reaching number nine, as well as peaking at number two on the Soul Singles chart. It was also Atlantic Starr's first single to hit the Billboard Hot 100, peaking at number 38.
