In 1966, the late B.J. Thomas released the follow-up to his hit cover of Hank Williams's song "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry," titled "Mama;" a thank you letter to his mum that peaked at Number 22 and paved the way for his solo album of the same name released via Scepter Records. "Who's the one who tied you shoe when you were young / And knew just when to come and see what you had done / Mama oh mama / And whos the one who patched your eye and told you not to cry / Cause he was to big for you to try / Mama mama," begins the Oklahoma-born Grammy-winning singer on a classic slice of '60s pop. B.J. Thomas, who died of lung cancer on March 23, 2021 at his home in Arlington, Texas aged 78, was also known for his recordings of "Hooked on a Feeling" (1968), "Raindrops Keep Fallin' on My Head," (1969) "Don't Worry Baby" (1977) and "Whatever Happened to Old-Fashioned Love" (1983).
