"The Jester" is a song from American alternative rock band Badflower's studio debut, OK, I'm Sick. The group, formed in Los Angeles, California, in 2013, became the first rock act to sign with the Big Machine Label Group in 2017, delivering their first studio album on February 22, 2019. OK, I'm Sick enjoyed moderate commercial success, reaching number 140 on the Billboard 200 and landing in the Top 10 of the US Top Alternative Albums chart. This was largely thanks to the chart-topping singles "Heroin" and "The Jester." Released as the album's fifth single on May 24, 2019, the latter showcased the band's masterful use of dynamics. Starting off with understated-palm muted guitar accents and atmospheric synth layers, "The Jester" slowly builds up into an epic chorus that finds Badflower at the peak of their instrumental might, relying on heavy layers of distortion and lead singer Josh Katz's vocal prowess. For a song about feeling taken for granted by the music industry, "The Jester" was particularly successful, earning the band their second number 1 on the Mainstream Rock Tracks chart.
