On his 1960 Top 10 country hit for Decca Records, "Walk Out Backwards," US country singer-songwriter Bill Anderson offered a novel antidote to heartbreak: "So walk out backwards if you must go / But please don't wave goodbye / Just wave one last hello / The truth won't hurt so much if I can just pretend / So walk out backwards / And I'll think you're walking in." Written and recorded by Bill Anderson, "Walk Out Backwards" hung around for 14 weeks on the Billboard Hot Country and Western Sides chart before hitting Number 9 in February 1960 and gave the South Carolina-born artist a career breakthrough that helped pave the way for future career that included a slew of hits in the 1970s: "Love Is a Sometimes Thing," "All the Lonely Women in the World" and "World of Make Believe." Illuminated by steel guitar, "Walk Out Backwards" embodied country's prominent Nashville Sound, which started to wane in the early 1960s.
