"Down in the Boondocks" hit-maker Billy Joe Royal came from a family of entertainers and had music running through his veins. After kicking off his career locally in the late 1950s, harnessing the rock 'n' roll energy of the time, he began seeing results in the early 1960s and became an overnight sensation when the aforementioned single went to number nine. The 1970s also proved a fruitful period and gave him enough credibility to pivot to mainstream country in the 1980s. "I'll Pin a Note on Your Pillow" is one of the biggest hits that emerged out of that period of plaid and country-pop, on which the star sees out the end of a relationship. "I might as well be leavin' / I'm already out of your mind / Baby, go right on dreamin' / Your dreams just might come true this time", he sings plaintively. The track was released in October 1987 as the first single from Billy Joe Royal's album The Royal Treatment, which reached number five on the Billboard Hot Country Singles & Tracks chart.
