"Twist Of Cain" is the stomping opening track on Danzig's debut self-titled album, which was produced by Rick Rubin and released just a year after the New Jersey doom rockers formed in 1987. Written by Glenn Danzig, "Twist of Cain" explores themes surrounding Christianity and the dark forces that lead to murder ("And he tumbled like a toy / Blood / Like this crimson highway / Spreading out / From his forehead to the ground"). The track features a cameo appearance from Metallica's James Hetfield in the chorus, who was allegedly a fan of the Misfits (Glenn Danzig's former group), but is uncredited on the album due for legal reasons. Mixing classic rock with occult and gothic elements (cue: church bells) and a whole load of attitude, "Twist of Cain" served as the perfect introduction to a band who went on to rule the metal roost for four decades, and who show no signs of slowing down just yet.
