In 1988, American glam metal band Ratt dropped their fourth studio album, Reach for the Sky. Produced by frequent collaborator Beau Hill and Mike Stone, Reach for the Sky continued the group's tried-and-true formula of hard-hitting guitar riffs and sleazy, late-night tales that had established them as one of the pioneers of the Los Angeles heavy metal scene. Even though the LP reached Number 17 on the US charts and received Platinum certification, it failed to replicate the success of albums like Out of the Cellar (1984) and Invasion of Your Privacy (1985), both of which had entered the Top 10 of the Billboard 200 chart in the previous years. However, Reach for the Sky's moderate success was largely built on the back of its second track "I Want a Woman," released as the album's second single in 1989. Written by Robbin Crosby, Juan Croucier, Stephen Pearcy, and producer Beau Hill, the track is sung from the perspective of a man pining for the love of a confident, self-sufficient woman.
