The opening keys sequence of "A Dream" by DeBarge may sound vaguely familiar; it's been sampled on hits by 2Pac (1996's "I Ain't Mad At Cha") and Blackstreet (1997's "Don't Leave Me") and is loved by millennials and Gen Xers alike. Created in 1983, the original blueprint is a masterclass in smooth 1980s soul, a heavenly slice written and steered by songwriter and vocalist Bunny DeBarge. “Last night I dreamed / That you were here with me / And we were in each other's arms, it was oh so heavenly," she sings, her buttery voice travelling fluidly up the octaves. "A Dream" was featured on the 1983 gold-certified album by DeBarge, In A Special Way, which was studded with hits, namely the singles "Time Will Reveal" and "Love Me in a Special Way," and went to number four on the US R&B charts. Issued by Gordy Records, In A Special Way is viewed by many as a landmark for early R&B and a sublime document of the era.
